Literacy Activities
Visit Victoria

  • Have the children sort the picture cards to decide which words start with the /v/ sound.
    • If the word starts with the /v/ sound, have children put the picture in the suitcase or duffle bag.
    • If the word does not start with the /v/ sound, have the children set the picture aside.
  • Point out that all of the items in the suitcase start with the letter V, which makes the /v/ sound.
  • Read the Vacation to Visit Victoria target text to the children and have them guess the names of the items they'll need to pack for the vacation based on the clues in the text.
    • If necessary, give the children visual clues by holding up the corresponding picture cards.
  • Read the text again and have the children pretend to do the following actions:
    • Vacuum
    • Play a violin
    • Hit a volleyball
    • Eat vegetables
    • Put on a vest
    • Put flowers in a vase
    • Drive a van

More Practice
Write the target letter

  • Remove the pictures from the suitcase and review what the children packed to take on their vacation.
  • Have the children help you make a list of the items they packed.
  • Allow the children to write the letter V at the beginning of each word and help them write the rest of the word.
  • Have the children add other things to their list that they could pack that start with the letter V (e.g., Velcro, videos, voice, victory, valley, village).

Something that makes music that you hold up like this.
A type of ball that you hit over a net.
Food that mom always wants you to eat because it is good for you.
Something to wear that does not have sleeves.
Something that holds flowers and breaks easily.
A big vehicle that holds lots of people.
We will have fun on our vacation to visit Victoria!
