  • Pipe cleaners or straws
  • Paper hearts
  • Plastic bottle
  • Picture cards

Overview
The children will make valentine vases as they practice saying the /v/ sound in words such as van, victory, and valentine.

Literacy Activities
Make a valentine vase

  • Cut the top off of a plastic bottle to make a vase.
  • Cut out the picture cards and spread them out on a table.
  • Help the children sort through the pictures to decide whether or not the word on each picture card starts with the /v/ sound.
    • If the word starts with the /v/ sound, have the children set the card next to the vase.
    • If the word does not start with the /v/ sound, have the children set the card aside.
  • Point out that all the words that start with the /v/ sound begin with the letter V.
  • Have the children attach the pictures of words that begin with V to the vase.
  • Cut out the paper hearts and have the children write the letter V on each heart.
  • Let the children make flowers by attaching the paper hearts to the tops of pipe cleaners, and then have them put the flowers in the valentine vase.

More Practice

  • Have the children write the letter V on small pieces of paper while they produce the /v/ sound.
  • Have the children attach the letters to the valentine vase.

Materials

  • Picture cards
  • Construction paper
  • Plastic bottle
  • Straws, pipe cleaners, or wooden sticks

Activity: Valentine Vase

  • Cut the top off of a plastic bottle to make a vase.
  • Lay out the picture cards on a table and help your child sort through the picture cards to find words that start with the /v/ sound.
    • If the word starts with the /v/ sound, place it next to the plastic bottle. 
    • If the word does not start with the /v/ sound, set it aside. 
  • Cut out paper hearts from construction paper and have your child write the letter V on each heart.
  • Attach the V pictures and the paper hearts to the plastic bottle to make it into a valentine vase.
  • Emphasize that the words on the vase all start with the letter V which makes the /v/ sound.
  • Glue three paper hearts together at the bottom to make flowers (with three heart-shaped petals), attach them to the end of straws or pipe cleaners, and place them in the valentine vase.
