Overview
The children will decorate a wig for Wanda as they practice saying the /w/ sound in words that start with the letter W such as water, web, and wig.
Literacy Activities
Make a wig for Wanda
- Read Bee-Wigged by Cece Bell and have the children listen for words that begin with the /w/ sound (optional).
- Create a wig by making a headband out of two strips of paper, curling smaller pieces of paper around a pencil, and then stapling the curled papers to the headband.
- Show the children the wig and explain that it belongs to a friend named Wanda.
- Write the word wig on the board and point out that the letter W makes the /w/ sound.
- Allow the children to take turns wearing the wig and pretend to be Wanda (or Willy).
Decorate a wig for Wanda
- With the children, read the words on the picture cards and point out that each word begins with the /w/ sound.
- Have the children underline the letter W at the beginning of each word.
- Allow the children to attach the picture cards to Wanda’s wig using glue, tape, or paper clips.
- If desired, let the children take turns wearing the wig again.
More Practice
Identify the target letter
- Make a list of words that start with the letter W (e.g., wish, wet, wall, web, win).
- Have the children underline the letter W at the beginning of each word.
- Instruct the children to say the /w/ sound each time they underline the letter W.
Write the target letter
- Help the children write the letter W on a writing practice page.
- Instruct the children to say the /w/ sound each time they write the letter W.
- Allow the children to draw a picture of an object that starts with the /w/ sound in the space below the letters (optional).

Objective
Associate the letter W with the /w/ sound as in wear, wig, and Wanda.
Materials
- Picture cards
- Strip of paper
- Yarn
- Glue, tape, or paper clips
Activity: Wanda's Wig
- Tell your child that you will make a wig for a friend named Wanda.
- Give your child two strips of paper and help him or her write the letter W several times on the strips of paper.
- Staple the strips together to make a headband, then have your child attach yarn to the headband to make a wig.
- With your child, read through the words on the picture cards.
- Have your child underline the letter W at the beginning of each word and emphasize that the letter W makes the /w/ sound.
- Let your child attach the cards to the headband using tape, glue, or paper clips.
