Overview
The children will pretend their fingers are wiggle worms as they practice saying the /w/ sound in words such as wiggle, watch, and worm.
Literacy Activities
Wiggle and waggle
- Read the Wiggle Worms target text with the children.
- Have the children circle the letter W each time it occurs in the Wiggle Worms target text.
- Use a black marker to draw two eyes and a smile on the tip of each child’s index fingers to make a worm (optional).
- Read the text again and have the children wiggle their finger every time they hear a word in the text that begins with the /w/ sound.
- Set out a pan filled with dirt or sand and let the children wiggle their fingers in the dirt like worms.
- Help the children trace the letter W in the sand and have them say the /w/ sound each time they trace the letter W.
Identify the target sound
- As a group, write a short story on the whiteboard about a wiggling worm that gets wet.
- Use words beginning with the letter W as much as possible.
- Have the children take turns writing the letter W at the beginning of each word that begins with the /w/ sound.
- Read the story together and let the children wiggle their fingers every time they hear a word that starts with the /w/ sound.
Write the target letter
- Help the children write the letter W on the writing practice page.
- Have the children say the /w/ sound each time they write the letter W.
- Allow the children to draw a picture of a wiggle worm in the space below the letters.

Objective
Associate the letter W with the /w/ sound as in wiggle, wet, and worm.
Materials
- Worm graphics
- Wiggle Worms target text
- Objects resembling a worm (e.g., cooked spaghetti, shoelace)
Activity: Wiggle Worms
- Read the Wiggle Worms text with your child.
- Wiggle the pretend worms while you repeat the Wiggle Worms target text together.
- Read the text again and have your child write the letter W in one of the segments of the worm graphic every time he or she hears the /w/ sound in the text.
- Write a sentence about worms by using words that begin with the letter W (e.g., "Worms like to wiggle and waggle. Worms come out when it is wet.").
- Repeat the activity as desired.
