Overview
The children will yell, “Yay for Y!” in a game as they practice saying the /y/ sound in words such as yesterday, yam, and yogurt.

Literacy Activities
Yell, “Yay for Y!”

  • Tape the letter Y graphic to the wall.
  • Have the children try to hit the Y by throwing a beanbag or soft toy.
  • Tell the children to yell, “Yay for Y!” when they hit the Y with the beanbag.
  • Tape the picture cards to the wall around the letter Y.
  • Help the children read the word on each card, emphasizing that each word begins with the letter Y, which makes the /y/ sound.
  • Allow the children to try to hit the picture cards with the beanbag.
  • Tell the children to yell, “Yippee! Yay for Y!” when they hit a picture card or the large Y with the beanbag.
  • Award the children a ribbon graphic for playing the Y game.
  • Help the children write the letter Y on the ribbon and point out that the letter Y makes the /y/ sound.
  • Let the children color their ribbon yellow, then have them find the letter Y in the word yellow on a crayon or marker.
