State and model the objective

Tell the children that they will pretend to zip and zoom as bumblebees and they will be saying the /z/ sound in words with the letter Z such as zoo, zip, and zoom.

Practice the skill within an activity

Zip and zoom through the zoo

  • Assemble bumblebee headbands by attaching the bee graphic (see below) to strips of paper fit to the children’s heads or attach the graphics to craft sticks to make bee puppets.
  • Set zoo animal graphics around the room.
  • Read the text Zip and Zoom (see below).
  • Allow the children to act out the story using the headbands/puppets and the zoo animal graphics.
  • Write zip and point out that the letter Z at the beginning of the word makes the /z/ sound.
  • Have the children find and circle the letter Z throughout the Zip and Zoom text.
  • Read text again and have the children write the letter Z in the air each time they hear the /z/ sound in the text.
  • Ask the children which animal at the zoo starts with the /z/ sound and emphasize that zebra starts with the letter z.

Apply the skill

Identify the target letter

  • Make a list of the words used throughout the activity that start with the letter z: zip, zoom, zigzag, zing, zebra, Zoe.
  • Have the children circle the letter Z in the words and ask them to say the /z/ sound each time they circle a letter.

Write the target letter

  • Help the children write the letter Z on the writing practice page (see below).
  • Allow the children to draw something that starts with the /z/ sound in the space below the letters (e.g., zigzag, zebra, zipper).
