Overview
The children will stack words on Jack the packhorse as they add sounds to the -ack ending to make words such as pack, sack, back, and stack. 

Literacy Activities
Play Stack the Snack Sack on Jack's Back

• Teach the children the Stack and Pack the Sack on Jack song to the tune of "It's a Small World."
• Play a game similar to pin the tail on the donkey, called Stack the Snack Sack on Jack's Back.
  • Have the children line up in front of the large packhorse graphic that's attached to the wall.
  • Blindfold a child and give him or her a snack sack picture with sticky tack or tape on the back.
  • Have the child try to tack his or her snack sack on Jack's back while everyone else sings the song.
  • When he or she puts the snack sack on Jack, have everyone call out together, "Jack has a snack pack sack on his back!"

More Practice
Identify, blend, and manipulate sounds

• Have children blend individual sounds into words by tapping their head (beginning sound) and their toes (-ack sound) then clap to say the whole word.
  • b + ack = back
  • s + ack = sack
  • j + ack = Jack
  • p + ack = pack
• With word blending cards, have the children make new words by changing the vowel or either of the consonants:
  • Change the beginning sound: back → sack; sack → Jack; Jack → pack
  • Change the ending sound: back → bad; sack → sat; pack → pan
  • Change the middle sound: back → buck; sack → sock; pack → pick
