A Kid Slid a Lid!

Objective
Blend a beginning consonant or consonant blend with -id to make words such as kid, slid, lid, and skid.
Lesson Plan
Target Words:
- lid
- slid
- kid
- skid
- did
- hid
Materials:
- Six lids of different colors and sizes
- -id ending word cards
- Letter cards
Overview
The children will play a game called A Kid Slid a Lid as they add sounds to the -id ending to make words such as lid, slid, kid, and skid.
Literacy Activities
Skid a lid
- Place the -id card at the end of a table.
- Label the different lids with beginning sounds such as k, l, d, h, sl, or sk.
- Show the children how to skid a lid by sliding it across a flat surface.
- Have each child pick a beginning letter lid to skid.
- Have children take turns trying to skid different lids to the -id card at the end of the table.
- When a lid makes it to the -id card, help children blend the beginning sound written on the lid with the -id ending to form a word.
More Practice
Segment and blend words using letter cards
- Use the word blending cards to help the children create -id words.
- Help the children read the words by saying the beginning sound(s) and -id ending separately, before blending the whole word together (e.g., k + id = kid).
- Have the children tape the word blending cards together when they make an -id word.
Write about the activity using target words
- Give each child a paper and pencil and have the children write words from dictation: lid, slid, kid, skid, did, hid.
- Emphasize the process of blending the beginning sound(s) with the -id ending to spell each word.
- Help the children write a sentence with -id words about something they could do with a lid (e.g. I slid the lid. I can skid a lid. I hid a lid.).
