- A container and lid that the children cannot see through
- Picture Cards
- What Hid Under the Lid? song
- Word blending cards
Overview
The children twill learn a song called What Hid Under the Lid? as they read and write words ending in –id such as kid, rid, lid, and bid.
Literacy Activities
- Teach the children the first verse of the song What Hid Under the Lid? sung to the tune of Pop Goes the Weasel
- Open the lid just enough for a child to reach in and take a picture/word card without seeing it.
- Have the child show the class and then have the class respond, “A _____ hid under the lid!”
- Teach the children the second verse of the song.
- Repeat until you have pulled out all of the picture/word cards.
More Practice
Identify, blend, and manipulate sounds
- With word blending cards, have the children make new words by changing either of the consonants or the vowel:
- kid → lid; bid → rid; did → hid
- hid → had; lid → led; did → dad
- kid → kit; lid → lip; did → dim
Read target words in a text
- Display the words to the What Hid Under the Lid? song on the board so that all of the children can see.
- Read the song together as a group.
- Read again, fading support.
- Allow one child at a time to come up and underline an –id word from the text.
- Repeat until all –id words are underlined.
Write about the activity using target words
- Display target words on a word wall.
- Re-read the What Hid Under the Lid? target text and permit the children to write their own version of the text.
- Encourage the students to use as many different -id words as possible in their writing.

- 2 pieces of paper (fold and staple folded edges to resemble a book)
Activity: What Hid Under the Lid?
- Sing the first verse of the song What Hid Under the Lid?.
- Open the lid and pull out a picture to see what hid there.
- After seeing what hid under the lid, sing the second verse of the song.
- Repeat for all pictures inside the container.
- Help your child make a book titled What Hid Under the Lid?. Help your child write the sentence, "A ____ hid under the lid" on each page, filling in the blank with something he or she found under the lid.
- Have your child illustrate each page.
- Have your child read the book to you.
- The activity can be repeated several times.
