Materials:

  • Paper or plastic bowls
  • Fish snacks (e.g., Goldfish crackers, Swedish fish, Jello fish shapes)
  • "Swish a Fish" song 
  • Fish picture 

Overview
The children will swish pretend fish while they add sounds to the –ish ending to make words such as fish, dish, wish, and swish. 

Literacy Activities
Act out the "Swish a Fish" song

  • Teach the children the "Swish a Fish" song, sung to the tune of "Skip to My Lou." 
  • Give each child a paper or plastic dish and a goldfish cracker to swish in their dish. 
  • While swishing their fish, have children sing the "Swish a Fish" song.
  • After singing both verses of the song, let children put the fish cracker in their mouth to squish.
  • Repeat as desired with other fish snacks.

More Practice
Read target words in a text 

  • Display the "Swish a Fish" song lyrics.  
  • Have children underline the words ending in –ish
  • Go through the text again, underlining the beginning sounds and –ish endings in different colors. 
  • Read the –ish words together, separating the beginning sound and –ish ending before blending (e.g. /f/ + /ish/ = fish).

Write about the activity using target words

  • Ask children what their favorite –ish word is. 
  • Give each child a picture of a fish. 
  • Help them write the –ish ending in the tail of the fish and the beginning sound of the word near the front of the fish. 
  • Have them read the –ish word on their fish and their neighbor’s fish.
