Lesson Plan

Target Words:

  • hit
  • bit
  • pit
  • lit

Materials:

  • A basket or box labeled "pit"
  • Baseball mitt graphic
  • Beanbags
  • Word cards
  • Word blending cards

Overview
The children will try to hit a baseball mitt with a beanbag as they add sounds to the -it ending to make words such as pit, sit, hit, and mitt.

Literacy Activities
Hit the mitt

  • Tape the mitt graphic low on a wall above the box that has been labeled "pit" and attach the word cards to the beanbags.
  • Explain that in baseball, a pitcher tries to throw the ball so it doesn't get hit, and the catcher tries to catch it with his baseball mitt (point to the baseball mitt picture on the wall).
  • Have the children select a beanbag and read the attached word.
  • Emphasize the process of blending the beginning sound(s) with the -it ending to read each word.
  • Let the children sit on a designated spot and throw the beanbag.
  • Tell them to try to hit the large mitt picture so the beanbag falls into the pit.
  • Have the other children chant, "Sit and hit the mitt!" as a child tosses the beanbag at the mitt.
  • Each time a child successfully hits the mitt and the beanbag lands in the pit, have him or her say, "I hit the mitt. I got the word _it into the pit."

More Practice
Blend, segment, and spell

  • With word blending cards, have the children make new words by changing the vowel or either of the consonants:
    • Change the beginning sound: hit → sit; kit → lit; fit → pit
    • Change the ending sound: hit → hid; sit → sip; pit → pin
    • Change the middle sound: bit → bat; hit → hot; sit → sat

Clap out sounds in words

  • Have the children take apart the word hit and clap once for each sound in the word (/h/ /i/ /t/).
  • Ask the children how many times they clapped for the word hit (three).
  • Clap for each sound in the word hit again to reinforce the model.
  • Repeat with other -it words: pit, lit, kit, wit, fit, bit, sit.

Write about the activity using target words

  • Give each child a whiteboard and have them write words from dictation, changing one or two letters each time to make a new word
    • bit → sit → sat → pat → pit → lit → lot → hot → hit → wit → fit.
