Literacy Activities
Rock around the room

  • Place the word cards in a sock, and place the four large picture cards (rock, clock, block, lock) in the four corners of the room.
  • Demonstrate the game:
    • Have everyone shout, “Tick-tock, time to rock!”
    • Start the music, and have children “rock” (dance) around the room.
    • When the music stops, have them stop at the nearest corner as quickly as they can.
    • Draw a word from the sock and read it. Ask the children what sound(s) are at the beginning of the word (e.g.; “What sound(s) does block start with?”).
    • Have the children in the same corner as the word card chosen from the sock sit out until the next round.
    • Have everyone shout, “Tick-tock, time to rock!” again and repeat the game.

More Practice
