Jog on a Frog Hunt
Objective
Blend a beginning consonant or consonant blend with -og to make words such as jog, log, and frog.
Lesson Plan
Target Words:
- bog
- fog
- jog
- log
- frog
Materials:
- Frog and pond graphics
- Frog footprints
- Frog Hunt chant
- Letter strips
- Objects for acting out the chant (optional)
Overview
The children will follow frog prints while they add sounds to the -og ending to make words such as bog, fog, jog, log, and frog.
Literacy Activities
Jog on the frog hunt
- Place the frog footprints around the room with the frog picture at the end of the trail.
- Read the Frog Hunt chant with the children.
- Begin the frog hunt by following the trail and saying the Frog Hunt chant together.
- Act out the chant as you follow the trail, using different as you follow the trail.
- When you get to a frog footprint, say the sound of the letter(s) on the footprint and have the children finish the word by saying, "-og!" (e.g., teacher: "I see a l-" children: "-og!")
- Have everyone blend the sounds and say the word together ("log!").
- After the frog at the end of the trail is found, make a list of all the -og words discovered during the frog hunt on the board: fog, log, bog, jog, dog, hog, cog, frog.
More Practice
Identify, blend and manipulate sounds
- With the frog pond graphic and letter strips have the children make words by changing the initial consonant, blending the sounds together to read each new word:
- Cut a slit in the lily pad along the dotted lines, then slide the letter strip into the slit until the first letter is showing.
- Help the children blend initial consonant(s) with the -og ending to read the word (e.g., /l/ + /og/ = log).
- Repeat the process with each of the letters on the strip by sliding the strip through the slit and covering up the extra letters.
