Objective
Blend a beginning consonant or consonant blend with –ub to make words such as cub, tub, and club.
Lesson Plan
Target Words:
- cub
- tub
- rub
- club
- grub
Materials:
- Blending cards
- Music
Overview
The children will dance in the Ub Club as they add sounds to the –ub ending words to make words such as cub, tub, rub, sub, and club.
Literacy Activities
Make –ub words
- Give each child a beginning or ending sound card, ensuring that an equal amount of each are passed out.
- Turn on the music and have children mingle (dance and move around).
- When the music stops, have children quickly find someone with whom they can make a word (a child with an –ub ending sound card finds a child with a beginning sound card).
- Walk around the room and have each pair of children read to you the word they formed.
- Create a sentence using a few of the words children formed (e.g., The cub is in the tub).
- Turn the music on and play the game again as many times as desired.
More Practice
March and say the sounds in –ub words
- Have the children march and say each sound of the word cub:
- Segment sounds: say /c/ (march right), say /u/ (march left), say /b/ (march right).
- Blend sounds: jump with both feet and say cub to blend the sounds into the whole word.
- Repeat with other –ub words (e.g., tub, rub, sub, club, etc.).
Write about the activity using target words
- Have children write a list of Ub Club words on the board.
- Create a silly slogan for the Ub Club using –ub words (e.g., The club that eats grub in a tub!).
- Have children draw some signs to invite others to be members of their club.
- Display the signs around the classroom or on the door.
