- sun
- fun
Materials:
- Sun graphic
- Letter cards
- Wax paper (optional)
- Yellow, orange, and red paint (optional)
Overview
The children will play "sun towards the sun" as they practice adding sounds to the -un ending to make words such as run, fun, and sun.
Literacy Activities
Play "run towards the sun"
- Divide the children into groups of six to seven.
- Have one group of children play at a time.
- Hang the picture of the sun on one wall and have the children line up by the other wall.
- Hold up three letter cards to form an -un word or a non -un word and have the children read it.
- If the word ends with -un have all the children shout out, "Run towards the sun!" and allow the children to run four steps toward the sun.
- If the word does not end with -un allow the children to take only one step.
- When the children get to the sun have them shout, "Let's have fun in the sun!"
More Practice
Identify, blend, and manipulate sounds
- Have the children form two lines facing each other.
- Have one line be the beginning letter line, and have the other be the -un line.
- Have the children in the beginning letter line grab a letter card from a basket of letter cards.
- Give each child in the other line an -un ending card.
- Have the first child in the beginning letter line to shout out their letter, and then have the child in the other line directly across from them should out the -un ending.
- Then have both children say the word they created.
- Move along the lines until all the children have helped create a word.
Write about the activity using target words
- Give each child a large piece of wax paper and squirt a combination of yellow, orange, and/or red paint on each child's paper.
- Have the children finger paint a sun and use their fingers to write words ending with -un in the middle of the sun.

- If the word you draw ends with -un, run four steps toward the sun.
- If the word does not end with -un, take one step toward the sun.
