Materials:

  • Sticky notes or small pieces of paper
  • Chalk (optional)

State the Objective
Tell the children that they will stomp, slide, and spin on the letter as they recognize and name the uppercase letter and the lowercase letter s.

Literacy Activities
Step on S

  • Write and name the letter S/s.
  • Have the children say the letter name as they write S and s in the air with their fingers.
  • Write a large S on a piece of paper and put it on the floor.
  • Have the children stand by the S and have them name the letter.
  • Let the children perform actions on or around the letter S (e.g., stand, stomp, step, slide, spin, skip, sneak). 

    Identify and write the target letter
  • Write a list of the words from the activity that begin with the letter S (e.g., stand, stomp, step, slide, spin, skip, sneak).
  • Instruct the children to circle the letter S in each word on the list.
  • Help the children write the letter S on small pieces of paper.
  • Have the children stick or slide the letters on the large letter S.
