State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will drip drops of water to fill a cup, can, pan, or pot as they read and write short vowel words such as pot, pan, drip, drop, cup, can, spill, and fill.

Literacy Activities
Introduce target words

  • Display a list of short-vowel words to the children.
  • Point out the different short vowels.

Read a book about Drips and Drops

  • Read the book Drip, Drop by Sara Weeks to and with the children (optional).

Drip drops of water in containers

  • Let the children drip drops in a pan, cup, and/or pot.
  • Engage the children in reading the texts (found below) about filling a pot, can, or cup with drops, fading support.

Write words with different short-vowel sounds

  • On a word chart with three columns labeled a, i, and o, have children write words from dictation. Have children choose the column where each word fits: can, pat, dad; drip, bin, fill; pot, mop, job.
