State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will drip drops of water to fill a cup, can, pan, or pot as they read and write short vowel words such as pot, pan, drip, drop, cup, can, spill, and fill.
Literacy Activities
Introduce target words
- Display a list of short-vowel words to the children.
- Point out the different short vowels.
Read a book about Drips and Drops
- Read the book Drip, Drop by Sara Weeks to and with the children (optional).
Drip drops of water in containers
- Let the children drip drops in a pan, cup, and/or pot.
- Engage the children in reading the texts (found below) about filling a pot, can, or cup with drops, fading support.
Write words with different short-vowel sounds
- On a word chart with three columns labeled a, i, and o, have children write words from dictation. Have children choose the column where each word fits: can, pat, dad; drip, bin, fill; pot, mop, job.

Bit by bit the drops get to the top.
What can I do with a pot that is full of drips and drops?
I can tip the pot and let the drips spill out.
