Overview
The children will exercise to get fit and read words that end with –at, –et, –it, and –ot: sat, mat, hat, pat, get, let, set, met, bet, pet, fit, sit, pit, bit, lot, hot, got, pot.

Literacy Activities
Read the book The Large Family: A Piece of Cake (optional).  
Get fit

• Ask the children what exercises they do to get fit.
• Explain that to get fit means to work to stay healthy.
• Show the children the signs Get Fit and Quit and read the signs with them. Alternate holding up the signs Get Fit and Quit to indicate when children should begin and end various exercises (e.g., jumping jacks, running in place, sit-ups).
• Comment that if the children get hot they need to drink a lot of water. 
• Have the children set out pretend exercise mats on the floor (e.g., towels, fabric, paper).
• Help the children write mat on a small piece of paper or sticky note to place on the mat.
• Allow the children to sit on the exercise mat and stretch. 

Sort words

• Cut out the word cards and place them in a hat.
• Have the children choose word cards from the hat and help them read the words on each card.
• Have the children use the word mat to sort the word cards by the ending: –at (mat, sat, hat, pat), –et (get, let, met, set), –it (fit, bit, sit, pit), and –ot (hot, lot, got, pot).

More Practice
Identify, blend, and manipulate sounds

• With word blending cards, help the children make new words by changing the vowel in each word: pit → pat → pet → pot; sit → sat → set; hit → hot → hat; bit → bat → bet.
• For each of the words the children make, have them produce the sounds for each letter and then blend those sounds back into the word.

Read target words in a text

• Read the text Let’s Get Fit to the children. 
• Engage the children in reading the text simultaneously with you.
• Read the Let’s Get Fit text again fading support.

Write about the activity using target words/patterns

• Give the children whiteboards and have them write words from dictation, changing one letter each time to make a new word: fit → sit → sat → hat → hot → lot → let → get → got → pot → pit → pat.
• Let the children write a simple sentence using words that end with –at, –et, –it, and –ot.
