State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will fit animals on a mat and read a text that focuses on short vowel words such as ram, pig, dog, cat, bug, and rat. 

Literacy Activities
Rest in the sun

  • Set out a piece of paper to be a mat. 
  • Set out the word cards (see below).
  • Tell the children that the pets want to rest in the sun, but will they fit on the mat?
  • Have the children read the names of the pets and set them out on the mat. 
  • Let the children rest in the sun with the pets (optional).

  • Read the text Can a Ram, Pig, Rat, Dog, and Cat Fit? (see below) with the children.
  • Engage in shared reading of the text Who can Fit on the Mat? (see below).
  • See who can sit and fit on the mat.
