Literacy Activities
Make new words

  • Have the children read the phrases below, act them out, and write some from dictation:

More Practice
Identify, blend, and manipulate sounds

  • With letters placed on cards, have the children make new words by changing the vowel or either of the consonants:
    • clip → clap, tip → tap, tick → tack, chip → chap, flip → flap, hit → hat, wig → wag, snip → snap, snip → rip, strip → strap, trip → trap, → zap, rip → rap, clip → clap, clap → cap, snap → cap, flip → flap, yip → yap, snap → cap, rip → wrap, lip → slip, nap → snap, lag → flag, chin → bin, fin → spin, leg → lag

Read target words and patterns introduced in the activity

  • Read the target text Do Not Trip on a Trap together as a class or a group.
  • Read the text again, fading support.
  • Have the children underline the short i words and then the short a or short o words.
  • Repeat with the target text Tick-tock and Clip-clop

Write about the activity using target words and patterns

  • Have the children write words from dictation: snip, snap, strip, strap, trip, trap, zip, zap, rip, rap, yip, yap, clip, clap, flip, and flap.
  • Using a whiteboard, have the children write words from dictation and then change a letter to make a new word:
    • tick, tack, slack, slick, slip, snip, snap, lap, lip, clip, clap, flap, flip, flit, flat, hat, hit, mitt, mat, rat, rag, rig, wig, wag, sag, sad, had, hid
  •  Have the children fill in incomplete sentences by picking from options presented verbally or in writing:
    • "I can play with ___ (e.g., strips and straps, snips and snaps, rips and wraps)."
    • "I like to pretend to ___ (e.g., trip and trap, snip and snap, yip and yap)."
