Overview
The children will follow an Ap Map as they read and write words that end in –ap such as map, cap, rap, and lap.

Literacy Activities
Follow the Ap Map

  • Display the Ap Map Directions large enough for the children to see and read it together.
  • Look at the Ap Map together as a group.
  • Point out to the children that the directions follow the map.
  • Lead the children around the room following the directions found in the target text.
  • As you follow the directions, point out the -ap words to the children and emphasize that the letter combinations ap makes the -ap sound in the words.

Apply the skill
Identify, blend, and manipulate sounds

  • With word blending cards, have the children make new words by changing either of the consonants or the vowel:
    • map tap; lap → cap; nap gap
    • map  mop; tap  tip; cap → cup
    • lap lad; map  mat; gap gas

Read and write target words

  • Make a list on the board of all the –ap words children heard throughout the activity and read the list together.
  • Have the children draw a picture of one of the activities they did, then write the corresponding -ap word below the picture.
