- Word cards

Overview
The children will get to rap while they read and write words ending in –ap such as cap, sap, tap, and lap.
Literacy Activities
Rap a Tap Tap
- Explain to the children that rap is a form of music using spoken words that adds rhythm to words that rhyme.
- Read Rap a Tap Tap by Leo & Diane Dillon (optional).
- Rap the Rap a Tap Tap rap with the children, clapping hands to emphasize the rhythm.
- Teach the children the words to the rap, this time tapping feet to emphasize the rhythm.
- Repeat the activity as desired, using other body parts to tap out the rhythm.
- If desired, use the Mr. Bojangles puppet to tap out the rhythm of the rap.
More Practice
Identify, blend, and manipulate sounds
- With word blending cards, have the children make new words by changing either of the consonants or the vowel:
- rap → tap; lap → cap; nap → gap
- rap → rip; tap → tip; cap → cup
- lap → lad; map → mat; rap → ram
Read target words
- Display the sentence strips to the children, and distribute one word card to each child.
- Ask individual children to read their word to the group, then match it to the same word in a sentence strip.
Write target words
- Have the children generate a list of –ap words and write them on the board.
- Have each child write about the activity they just did, using as many –ap words from the board as they can.
