Lesson Plan

Target Words:

  • Ted
  • Jed
  • Ned
  • fed

Materials:

  • 3 dog pictures: Ted, Jed, and Ned
  • 3 large bowls/baskets (dog bowls) labeled Ted, Jed, and Ned
  • Colored tape
  • Dog bones
  • Bean bags or balls
  • Word blending cards
  • Ed Fed His Dog Ted target text

Overview
The children will make sure that Ned, Ted, and Jed (display the respective dog pictures) get fed while they read and write words ending in –ed, such as Ted, Ned, Jed, and fed.

Literacy Activities
Ted, Jed, and Ned

  • Divide the class into two teams and have the teams sit behind a colored tape line on either side of the room.
  • Put a dog bone on a bean bag or ball and place three “dog bowls” in between the two lines.
  • Have a child from each team stand and toss a beanbag into one of the “dog bowls”.
  • If the beanbag lands in one of the baskets, the child must read the label on that basket to tell everyone which dog he or she fed (e.g., “I fed Ned!”)
  • Keep track on a whiteboard or piece of paper each time a dog bone lands in a basket.
  • Allow every child to have at least one turn.
  • When everyone has tossed a beanbag, count how many bones each of the dogs were fed.
  • Repeat as many times as desired.

More Practice
Identify, blend, and manipulate sounds

  • With word blending cards, have the children make new words by changing either of the consonants or the vowel:
    • Jed Ned; red fed; bed led
    • bed bad; led lid; red  rod
    • bed bet; led less; bed beg

Read target words in a text

  • Read the Ed Fed His Dog Ted text together, underlining all of the words that end in –ed.
  • Read the text(s) again, having the children read the –ed words (support as needed).
  • Help the children make dog bowl labels for Ted, Ned and Jed, to take home for the home activity.

Write about the activity using target words

  • Re-read the target text Ed Fed His Dog Ted and permit the children to write their own version of the text
  • Encourage the children to use as many different -ed words as possible.

Objective

Read and write words ending in -ed.

Materials

  • Paper dog bones (cut out, attach a paperclip to each)
  • Dog bowl labels (one each for Ted. Jed, and Ned )
  • 3 large bowls
  • Paper and pencils

Activity:  Ted, Jed, and Ned

  • Help your child attach their dog bowl labels to the large bowls.
  • Place the bowls close together in a triangle shape and take turns dropping the bones into the labeled dog bowls.
  • When the bone lands in a bowl, have you or your child say, "I fed..." and then read the name on the bowl that the bone landed in (i.e., Ted, Jed or Ned).
  • Once all the bones have been dropped into the bowls, count the bones in each bowl to determine which dog was fed the most.
  • Repeat activity as many times as desired, emphasizing the -ed target throughout the activity.
  • Together think of words ending in -ed (e.g., red, shed, bed, fed, sled), and have your child write the words on the dog bones (support as needed).
  • Encourage your child to read the word on each bone, assisting if needed.
