State and Model the Objective
The children will skid lids from kid to kid as they read and write words that end in –id such as lid, kid, bid, did, rid, grid, slid, and skid.

Literacy Activities
Bid for a lid

  • Show the kids lids and exclaim, “A lid for a kid!”
  • Hold up a lid and let the children bid for the lid (raise their hands to get the lid).
  • Ask which kid did not get a lid.
  • Let the children put their names on the inside of their lids.

Make lids skid from kid to kid

  • Put the lids on the floor or a table with the names facing down and shuffle them.
  • Have the children sit in a circle with the lids in the middle.
  • Ask, “Which lid goes with which kid?”
  • Let each kid choose a lid from the center of the circle and skid it to another kid.
  • Let the children look at the name on their lid.
  • Ask each kid, “Did you get your lid?”
  • Let the children keep the lid if it has their name on it or skid the lid to the kid who’s name is on the lid if it does not have their name.
  • Let the kids slide and skid their lids from kid to kid until they each have the lid with their name on it.

More Practice
Identify, blend and manipulate sounds

  • With word blending cards, have the children make new words by changing the vowel or either of the consonants:
    • kid did, lid hid, rid bid, slid skid
    • rid red, bid bed, lid lad
    • bid bit, hid hip, lid lip

Read target words/patterns introduced in the activity

  • Read the A Lid Can Skid from Kid to Kid target text together with the children.
  • Read the text again fading support.
  • Have the children underline the words that end in –id.
  • Repeat with the target text Make a Lid Skid (optional).

Write about the activity using target words/patterns

Play a “pass the lid” game with children.

  • Have the children sit in a circle and take turns passing the lid.
  • As children get the lid, have them say a new word that ends in -id by changing the initial consonant.
  • Write each new word on the board.
  • Repeat the game, but this time, have children write each word on a piece of paper and place it on the lid.

Engage the children in interactive writing about their experience by generating sentence frames and letting the children fill in target words by picking from options presented verbally or in writing:

  • I have a ____  (lid).
  • I have a _______ (lid) for a _______ (kid).
  • It is a _______ (lid) that can ________ (skid.).
  • It is a  ________ (lid) that can skid from ________ (kid) to ________ (kid).
  • Give each child a whiteboard and have them write words from dictation, changing one or two letters each time to make a new word: rid, red, bed, bad, bag, big, bid, did, dad, had, hid, lid, slid, skid, kid.
