Overview
The children will play a game with a squid as they read and write words ending in –id such as kid, squid, lid, and rid.

Literacy Activities
Kid with a Squid

  • Give each child a picture of a squid.
  • Read one of the sentences written on the board and have everybody pretend to do the action as they hold their squid; repeat several times.
  • Choose a child to choose one of the actions to perform for the class, then ask the children, “What did the kid do with the squid?”.
  • Have the other children guess which –id action the child did. 
  • When they have guessed correctly, have everyone call out, “Get rid of the squid!” and have him or her place their picture of the squid in a container under the lid.
  • Repeat until all children have had a turn and returned their squid to the container under the lid.

More Practice
Identify, blend, and manipulate sounds

  • With word blending cards, have the children make new words by changing either of the consonants or the vowel:
    • kid lid; bid squid; did hid
    • hid had; lid led; did dad
    • kid kit; lid lip; did  dim

Read target words

  • Review the actions the children did with the squid. 
  • Read the sentences displayed on the board and have the children raise their hand each time they hear an –id word.
  • Read the sentences together, having the children read the words ending in –id.

Write about the activity using target words

  • Display target words on a word wall.
  • Engage the students in writing a sentence or two expressing ideas from the lesson activity.

Materials

  • Sentence strips and squid picture
  • Bag
  • Container with a lid
  • Crayons or markers

Activity: The Kid with a Squid

  • Ask, "What did the kid do with the squid?" Take turns reading a sentence strip to answer.
  • Help your child read the sentence and perform the action with the squid.
  • After one person is done with an action say, "Get rid of that squid!" and pass the squid along to the other person.
  • Read the sentence strips with your child and have him or her underline the words ending with -id.
  • Have your child choose his or her favorite action. Help your child write that sentence on the paper and illustrate the action.
