State the Objective
Tell the children that they will sing a song called "Who Hid the Lid?" while they read and write words ending in –id such as hid, lid, kid and rid.
Literacy Activities
Who hid the lid?
- Have the children sit in a circle with the container and lid in the center.
- Teach the children the lyrics of the "Who Hid the Lid?" target text to the tune of "Row, Row, Row Your Boat"
- Pick one child to leave the room.
- Have another child hide the lid in their pocket.
- Have the first child rejoin the group and stand in the middle of the circle.
- Sing the first verse of the song "Who Hid the Lid?"
- Have the child in the middle guess who hid the lid.
- Sing the second verse of the song, filling in the blanks with the name of the child who hid the lid.
- Repeat as desired.
Identify, blend, and manipulate sounds
- Let the children use the word-building cards to make new words by changing either the consonant(s) or the vowel:
- kid → lid, bid → rid, did → hid
- hid → had, lid → led, did → dad
- kid → kit, lid → lip, did → dim
- Have the children use the word-building cards as a model to practice writing the target words.
