State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will let paper ships zip along and tip and flip and dip in water as they read words that end in ip, such as ship, flip, drip, trip, tip, and rip

Literacy Activities

Let paper ships tip, dip, and rip

  • Fold paper into ships using the pattern for a paper hat (paper hat instructions)
    • Turn the tip of the hat down to form the bottom of the boat and staple or tape the point up. 
  • Have the children slip the ship down the side of a bowl of water.
  • Hold up a list of actions for the children to read that lets them know what the ships will do:
    • Let the ship zip. Zip along, ship! 
    • Let the wind whip. Whip, wind, whip!
    • Let the ship tip. Tip, tip, ship.
    • Let the ship flip. Flip, ship!
    • Let the ship dip down. Dip, ship.
    • Let the ship drip. Drip, ship.
    • Let the ship rip! Rip, rip! The ship rips.
