Overview
The children will sip and drip water as they practice reading and writing words that end in -ip such as snip, rip, tip, clip, and drip.
Literacy Activities
Drip and sip water
- Explore various ways of taking a sip with the children and highlight the –ip ending as you comment on what you and/or the children do:
- “Tip and drip.” (Tip a container of water and let it drip into a cup.)
- “Tip and sip. Tip. Sip. Don’t drip.” (Tip a cup and then sip. Repeat several times.)
- “Snip and sip.” (Show a straw that is too tall for the cup. Snip a small piece off the straw then sip from the straw.)
- “Snip, tip, drip, and sip.” (Snip open a juice pack or Ziploc bag with water and tip to let drip into a cup and sip. Repeat by making the opening a little wider each time.)
- “Snip, dip, drip and sip.” (Snip a straw. Dip the straw into water and hold a finger over the opening at the top. Let the water drip into your mouth or into a cup.)
Snip words that end with –ip
- Help the children choose word cards.
- Once the children have read the words, let them snip and clip the words.
More Practice
Identify, blend and manipulate sounds
- With word blending letter cards, have the children make new words by changing the vowel or either of the consonants:
- Change the beginning sound(s): rip → tip, sip → snip, clip → slip
- Change the ending sound: tip → tin; lip → lit; rip → rid
- Change the vowel: tip → top; sip → sap; lip → lap; drip → drop
Read target words/patterns introduced in the activity
- Read the target text Snip, Tip, Drip, and Sip together with the group.
- Have the children underline the words that end in –ip.
- Read the text again, fading support.
- Repeat with the target texts Ways to Sip, Sip from a Juice Bag, and Sip from a Straw.
Write about the activity using target words/patterns
- Distribute paper and pencils and have the children write words from dictation: tip, lip, sip, dip, rip.
- Let the children dip the tip of a straw in water and drip the water on the list of words.
