  • Tan paper circles 
  • A small amount of red paint or ketchup packets
  • Small ziplock bag (if using the red paint)
  • Red, green, yellow or orange construction paper
  • Fork
  • Bowl
  • Plate
  • Scissors to snip or clip

  • Pizza Party by Grace Maccarone (Scholastic, 1994) (optional)
  • Word-building cards with -ip*

State and Model the Objective

Tell the children that they will flip dough and rip strips of toppings to make a pizza and will read and write words ending in -ip, such as tip, rip, strip, flip, and snip.
 

Literacy Activities

Flip dough and drip sauce to make a pizza

  • Have children flip tan paper circles like pizza dough
  • Let the children . . . . .
    • Rip, snip or clip packets of red paint or ketchup 
    • Tip and drip the sauce into a bowl
    • Whip the sauce with or without a little water 
    • Drip the sauce on the ‘dough’ or let snips of red paper be sauce
    • Rip and snip strips of cheese and toppings onto a plate
    • Rip, snip, or clip strips of green, orange, or red paper to be pepper
    • Rip, snip, or clip yellow or orange paper to be cheese.
    • Slip the strips of toppings from a plate onto the pizza.

  • Snip or rip the pizza into strips. 
  • Slip strips of pizza onto a plate.

Read about making pizza 

  • Have the children help make a list of the -ip words and read the list together.
  • Read the Drip Sauce and Rip Strips Pizza Recipe (see below) with the children.

Blend and Manipulate Words

  • With word-building cards, have the children make new words by changing a beginning or ending consonant(s) or the vowel:  
    • Change the beginning consonant(s): striptrip; dipdrip; lipflip; riptrip; striprip.
    • Change the vowel: tiptop; triptrap; dripdrop; snipsnap.
    • Change the ending consonant(s): dipdim; tiptin; triptrim.

Read and write about how to rip, tip, drip, whip, snip and clip to make a pizza  

  • Read the Make Pizza text (see below) with the children.
  • Display a word wall with -ip words.
  • Have the children write about someone making a pizza as they rip, drip, tip, and whip sauce; flip dough; and snip and clip strips of pepper and cheese.
