Literacy Activities
Swish a fish

  • Teach the children the Swish a Fish song.
  • Give each child a paper or plastic dish.
  • Give the child an edible fish to swish in their dish. While swishing their fish, have the children sing the Swish a Fish song.
  • After singing both verses of the song, let the children put the fish cracker/candy in their mouth to squish.
  • Repeat as many times as desired.

More Practice
Identify, blend and manipulate sounds

  • With word blending cards, have the children make new words by changing the vowel or either of the consonants:
    • dish fish, swish squish, wish fish
    • dish  dash, wish  wash
    • fish fit, wish win, dish dip

Read and write target words

  • Display the Swish a Fish target text and sing the song together as a class, and have the children swish their fish every time they hear an –ish word.
  • Give each child a picture of a fish. Have them write an –ish word inside their fish. Then have each child come up one by one and tell the class which –ish word they wrote on their fish. Have them then put the fish on the board.
