Literacy Activities
Break an item into bits to make it fit

  • Engage the children in reading the Bit by Bit text (see below).
  • Repeat, fading support.
  • Have the children try to put a big item into a small box.
  • Let the children try to hit and sit on the thing to make it fit.
  • Instruct the children to rip or break the item into bits to make it fit in the small box.
  • Help the children write -it words on bits of paper (e.g., bit, fit, sit, hit, pit).

Write about the activity using target words/patterns

  • Have the children write words from dictation: bit, fit, fin, fan, fat, sit, hit, pit.
  • For each word, have the children produce the sounds and blend those sounds into the word (e.g., bit: b-i-t, bit).
  • Let the children fill words in sentence frames (e.g., I fit a ___ in the ___).

Fit word cards in a slit

  • Cut a slit in the Fit it in the Slit worksheet (see below).
  • For each word, have the children produce each of the sounds and blend them into the word.
  • Let the children fold or rip the word cards so they fit in the slit.

I want to put a big thing in a little box.
But it will not fit!
If I hit it, will it fit?
No. It still will not fit.
If I sit on it, will it fit?

What if I break it into bits?
Bit by bit I can fit the big thing in a little box..
Lickety split!
