  • Drink mix (e.g., Tang, Koolaid, Crystal Light, powdered lemonade, etc.)
  • Individual packets of drink mix that can be ripped or snipped or clipped (made by putting a little mix in folded paper or plastic bags that zip) 
  • Little bit of sugar in folded paper, zip lock bag, or small sandwich bag
  • Cups to use to drink the mixed drink mix
  • Jug, jar, or pitcher filled with water
  • Craft stick to use to mix
  • Letter Cards

The children will mix and sip a bit of drink mix as they practice reading and writing words that contain the short ĭ vowel: tip, drip, chip, flip, sip, lip, slip, rip, clip, snip, zip, mix, bit, fit, sit, in, lick.

Literacy Activities
Mix a drink

  • Make individual packets of drink mix by slipping in a bit of mix into folded paper or a Ziploc bag.
  • Make packets of sugar by slipping in a bit of sugar into folded paper or a Ziploc bag.
  • Have the children label individual packets of drink mix with the word mix.
  • Help the children snip, clip, or rip open a packet of drink mix.
  • Let the children dip a spoon into the mix and slip (put) a little mix into a cup.  
  • Help the children rip, snip, or zip open a packet of sugar and slip some of the sugar into a cup.
  • Let the children mix the sugar with the drink mix.
  • Tip the jug or pitcher to put some water into a cup and then mix the drink mix with a craft stick.
  • Tell the children to sit and sip some of the drink mix, then let them lick their lips.
  • Remind the children to be careful not to let the drink slip out of their hands.

Mix up words

  • Give the children letter cards and have them make new words by mixing up the beginning sounds or ending sounds:
    • Change the beginning sound: zip tip  rip; bit fit sit; mix fix six
    • Change the ending sound: lid lit lip; hip hit hid; pin pit pig
  • For each of the words the children make, have them produce the sounds for each letter and then blend those sounds back into the word.

Apply the skill
Read target words in a text

  • Allow the children to underline the words with the short ĭ vowel.
  • Read the target text Mix a Bit of Drink Mix to the children.
  • Engage the children in reading the text simultaneously with you.
  • Read the text again, fading support.

Write target words

  • Have the children use a whiteboard to write a target word and then change one letter at a time to make new words: sip snip rip rap tap tip zip lip lick lock lot lit bit bin tin tan fan fin  fix mix .
  • Let the children write a simple sentence using words with the short ĭ vowel (e.g., I like to mix).

Mix and Sip a Bit of Drink Mix

Let’s mix up a drink from a drink mix.
Rip or snip open a packet of mix.
Dip into the mix and put the mix into a cup.
Rip or snip open a packet of sugar.
Tip the packet and let the sugar slip into the mix.
Tip a jug of water and let a bit of it drip into the mix. 
Mix the water with the drink mix. 
Sit down to take a sip.
Lick your lips!
