- Video of bear hunting for grubs (optional)

State the Objective
Tell the children that they will find grubs for Chub the cub, and read and write words that end with -ub, such as cub, grub, tub, chub, sub, and rub.
Literacy Activities
Introduce target words
- Show the children the -ub target words.
- Read the words with the children.
- Read the Grub for Chub the Cub target text (see below) with the children.
Feed grub to Chub the Cub
- Assemble the Chub the Cub sack puppet (see below).
- Explain that grubs are bugs that bears like to eat and that sub is a short name for a long sandwich.
- Also explain that “grub” is a word that sometimes means “food.”
- Have the children take turns picking and reading a picture card from the “Grub Tub.”
- If the picture card is a grub or a sub, have the child feed the card to Chub the Cub as everyone cheers, “Chub the Cub loves grubs!” (or subs).
- If the picture card is not a grub or a sub, have the child put the card aside.
Chub the Cub likes -ub words
- Pile the word cards and ask the children to help you find Chub the Cub’s favorite words: words that end in -ub (sub, rub, tub, grub, cub).
- Have the children take turns reading the word cards aloud.
- If the word ends in -ub, have the child put it in the “Grub Tub.”
- If the word doesn’t end in -ub, have the child put the card aside.
Identify, blend, and manipulate sounds
- With word-building cards (see below), have the children make new words by changing a consonant or the vowel.
- Change the beginning consonant: cub → tub; chub → grub; sub → cub
- Change the vowel: cub → cab; sub → sob; grub → grab
- Change the ending consonant: cub → cup; tub → tug; sub → sun
Write about the activity using target words and phrases
- Let the children write short sentences using target words.
- Chub is a hungry ___ (cub).
- He wants to eat a bug called a ____ (grub).
- A big sandwich is called a ____ (sub).
- He ate the subs in his ____ (tub).
- Chub gave his tummy a ____ (rub).

Chub the Cub is a hungry cub.
He likes to eat little bugs called grubs.
But he also likes to eat big sandwiches called subs.
Chub the Cub has a tub with some subs and grubs.
Chub ate the subs.

Then Chub the Cub gave his tummy a rub.
