State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will pretend to be stuck ducks and read and write words ending with -uck, such as: duck, stuck, muck, pluck and yuck.

Literacy Activities
Stuck in the muck

  • Cut out and attach each duck mask to a craft stick.
  • Teach the children the Five Little Ducks Get Stuck song.
  • Give six children duck masks and designate one of them to be the mother duck (with the apron).
  • Have the six "ducks" act out the song as the rest of the children sing.
  • Explain that when a duck in the song gets stuck, one of the ducks needs to sit down and pretend to be stuck.
  • Invite other children to pretend to be the ducks and get stuck.

Identify, blend and manipulate sounds

  • Let the children make a target word (e.g. duck) from letter cards and then let them make different words by changing either of the consonants or the vowel.
    • Change the beginning sound(s): duck muck; yuck → duck; stuck  pluck
    • Change the vowel: duck  deck; stuck  stack
    • Change the ending sound(s): muck  mug; pluck  plum; duck  dust
  • For each of the words the children make, have them produce the sounds for each letter and then blend those sounds back into a word.

Read target words in a text

  • Have the children underline words that end in -uck in the Five Little Ducks Get Stuck song.
  • Read the lyrics to the children and then engage them in reading the lyrics with you.
  • Read the lyrics with the children again while fading support.

Write about the activity using target words and phrases

  • Read words from a flip-book.
    • Write one letter or letter blend on each page of a stack of sticky notes (e.g., d, y, m, l, b), staple the sticky notes on the left side of a 3x5 index card, and write -uck on the index card to the right of the sticky notes to create a flip-book.
    • Have the children say the beginning sound from the sticky note, read -uck from the index card, and then blend the two parts together to read the word.
    • Help the children write a simple sentence using the words from the flip-book (e.g., The duck got stuck in the muck.).

They swam in muck and one got stuck.
Mama duck called, “Quack! Get back, ducks!”
Three little ducks got out of the muck.

They swam in muck and one got stuck.
Mama duck called, “Quack! Get back, ducks!”

She swam in muck and she got stuck.
Mama duck called, “Quack! Get back, ducks!”
No little ducks got out of the muck.

Sad mama duck went to the muck.
All the little ducks were stuck, stuck, stuck.
Mama duck said, “Yuck, yuck, yuck, yuck!”!
