Collect -ut words from the King Tut hut

- Give each of the children an -ut game piece and have them each color their piece a different color.
- Explain and demonstrate how to play the game:
- Roll the die and move your game piece the specified number of spaces.
- If you land on an –ut word, take an –ut word card from the King Tut hut and read it out loud.
- The person with the most word cards at the end of the game gets to wear the King Tut crown for the next round. (In the case of a tie, have several crowns available.)
- Repeat the game as desired.
- Ask the children what words in the game ended in -ut.
More Practice
Identify, blend and manipulate sounds
- Let the children make a target word (e.g. tut) from letter cards and then let them make different words by changing either of the consonants or the vowel.
- Change the beginning sound(s): tut → hut; nut → but; hut → cut
- Change the vowel sound(s): but → bat; hut → hit; nut → net
- Change the ending sound(s): but → bun; cut → cup; nut → nun
- For each of the words the children make, have them produce the sounds for each letter and then blend those sounds back into the word.
Read target words in a text
- Have the children underline the words that end in -ut in the King Tut target text.
- Read the King Tut text to the children.
- Engage the children in reading the King Tut text simultaneously with you.
- Read the King Tut text again, fading support.
Write about the activity using target words and phrases
- Display target words on a word wall (i.e., tut, nut, but)
- Refer the children to the word wall and have them write a sentence or two expressing ideas from a lesson activity or target text (e.g., King Tut lives in a hut).
