Tell the children that they will make a kit for kindergarten as they recognize and name the letters K and k.

Literacy Activities
Create a kindergarten kit

• Write and name the letters K and k.
• Have the children write the K and k in the air with their fingers.
• Read The Night Before Kindergarten to the children, emphasizing the letter K (optional).
• Tell the children that they will help make a kindergarten kit and explain that the kit should only have pictures that begin with the letter K.
• Have the children take turns choosing and naming a picture card (see below), with support as needed.
• Decide together whether the picture has a letter K on it, and put the ones that start with K in the kindergarten kit.
• Explain how each item in the kit will help them in kindergarten:
  • Kiss: You may get a kiss goodbye on your first day of kindergarten.
  • Key: Your teacher will need a key to open the door of your classroom.
  • You may want to play kickball at recess!
  • Keyboard: You will need a keyboard if you use a computer in kindergarten.
  • Kindness: It is always important to be kind to the other children!
• Allow the children to make their own kindergarten kit using a set of picture cards and a baggie (optional).
• Have the children say, “K in the Kindergarten Kit” as they put each K picture in their kit. 

Identify the target letter

• Write a list of words from the activity (e.g., kit, kind, kindergarten, kite, key).
• Have the children point to the K in each word.
• Help the children write the letters K and k on the backs of the picture cards for their kindergarten kit (support as needed).
