Materials:

  • Monster mask picture*
  • Letter cards*
  • M objects (macaroni, mini marshmallows, markers, etc.)
  • Book: A Halloween Mask for Monster by Virginia Mueller or Bedtime at the Swamp by Kristen Crow (optional)

State the Objective
Tell the children that they will make a monster mask with the letters M and m on it as they recognize and name the letters M and m.

 

Literacy Activities


Make an M monster mask

  • Print the monster mask (see below) on cardstock, or glue it on a paper plate with eye cutouts.
  • Read one of the books listed above (optional), emphasizing the letter M.
  • Write and name the letters M and m.
  • Show the children a monster mask and point out that monster and mask both begin with the letter M.

     

Decorate a monster mask with Ms

  • Mix up the letter cards (see below), and let the children take turns choosing a card.
  • If a letter is an M or m, let the children glue it to the monster mask.
  • Invite the children to decorate their masks with objects that begin with the letter M (e.g., macaroni, mini marshmallows, markers, etc.).
  • Make a list of the items used to decorate the mask and have the children circle the letter M or m at the beginning of each word. 

Write the target letter

  • Have the children write the letters M and m several times on a piece of paper.
  • Let the children glue the letters on their monster mask.
