Weave a Web
Weave a Web
Objective
Recognize and produce the /w/ sound in a series of words that all begin with /w/.
Lesson Plan
Target Words:
- weave
- web
- world
- wagon
Materials:
- Paper
- Yarn—several strands for each child about 8 inches long
- Picture cards—at least one /w/ card for each child
State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will weave webs for /w/ things as they listen for words that start with the /w/ sound, such as watermelon, wagon, wand, and world.
Literacy Activity
Weave things with /w/ into a web
- Show the children how to weave a web by criss-crossing strands of yarn in random directions on a piece of paper and taping the ends to the paper.
- Explain that weave and web both start with the /w/ sound, and have the children come up one at a time and choose a picture card.
- Help the children to identify the picture on their card and emphasize the first sound in the word (e.g., /w/, /w/, witch).
- If the object on the picture card begins with the /w/ sound, have the child say, “I will weave a ___ (e.g., witch) into my web!” and have him or her tape the picture card to his or her web.
- If the picture on the card does not begin with the /w/ sound, have the child say, “I won’t weave a ___ (e.g., dog) into my web!” and set the card off to the side.
- Continue the activity until all of the children have a card or two taped to their webs.
More Practice
Repeat words with the target letter
Have the children show their webs to the class and help them to describe their webs using /w/ words [(e.g., I wove a ___ (e.g., witch) into my web.].

Activity: What's on the Web?
- Talk with your child about how a spider weaves webs. If the weather is warm enough, go outside with your child and find a spider web.
- Take a walk inside or outside with your child and look for things that begin with the /w/ sound (e.g., window, waffle, water, wood).
- When you and your child find something that begins with the /w/ sound, let your child draw the /w/ item on his or her web.
- Repeat until your child has drawn several /w/ things on the web.
- Have fun taking turns pointing to and identifying the items on the web by saying, "We wove a ___ (e.g., waffle) into the web."
