Overview
The children will help make a wig as they recognize and name the uppercase letter W and the lowercase letter w.
Literacy Activities
Make a W Wig
- Write the uppercase letter W and the lowercase letter w on a whiteboard, name the letters, and have the children say the letter name as they write the W and w in the air with their fingers.
- Read the book Bee-Wigged by Cece Bell to the children, emphasizing the letter W (optional).
- Show the children a wig (real or made of paper) and tell them that they will help make a W wig.
- Mix up the letter cards and have the children choose a card one at a time.
- Help the children decide whether or not each letter is an uppercase letter W or a lowercase letter w.
- If the letter is a W or a w, put it near the wig.
- If the letter is not a W or a w, place it in the discard pile.
- If a child misidentifies a distractor letter as a W or a w, have him or her look at the W and w on the whiteboard and compare them to the letter he or she picked.
- Let the children attach the W letter cards to the wig.
- Allow the children to wear the wig (optional).

Objective

Materials
- Wig instructions
- Letter cards
- Strips of paper
- Scissors
- Stapler or tape to make a wig
Activity: W Wig
- With your child, follow the directions to make a wig.
- Mix up the letter cards and have your child choose a card one at a time.
- Help your child decide whether or not each letter is an uppercase W or a lowercase w.
- If the letter is a W, put it near the wig.
- If the letter is not a W, discard it.
- Let your child attach the W letter cards to the wig.
- Have your child write the letter W on small pieces of paper then let him or her attach the papers to the wig.
- Write a large letter W on two pieces of paper and place them at opposite ends of the room.
- Allow your child to wear the wig in a fashion show and have him or her model the wig by walking from one W paper to the next.
- The activity can be repeated several times.
