Objective

Recognize and produce the /b/ sound in a series of words that all begin with /b/.

Lesson Plan

Target Words:

  • big
  • banner
  • blue
  • bows
  • buttons

Materials:

  • Big sheet of blue butcher paper
  • Picture cards or objects that begin with /b/ (e.g., buttons, bows, beans)
  • Black, blue, and brown markers

State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will decorate a big blue banner with bows and buttons as they listen for words that start with the /b/ sound, such as big, blue, bows, and buttons.

Literacy Activities
Create a beautiful big banner

  • Work together with the children to attach objects or graphics of things that begin with the /b/ sound to the big blue banner.
  • As the children place items on the banner, encourage them to say the name of the item, emphasizing the /b/ sound (e.g., "/b/ /b/ button").
  • Use words that start with the /b/ sound to discuss what you are doing with the children as they attach the objects or pictures to the banner (e.g. "The big blue banner needs bows." "Buttons and balloons belong on the big blue banner.").
  • Review the /b/ items that were put on the banner, emphasizing the /b/ sound, and have the children repeat the words back to you.

More Practice
Copy the target letter

  • Write a large, capital letter B on the banner, then have the children take turns using black, blue, and brown markers to trace the letter as they say, "/b/ /b/ /b/ brown" (or whatever color marker they are using).

March and say the sounds in words

  • Have the children march in place as they say each sound of the word bag:
    • Segment sounds: /b/ (march right), /a/ (march left), /g/ (march right)
    • Blend sounds: jump with both feet and blend the sounds into the whole word: bag.
  • Repeat with other words that start with /b/ (e.g., big, bus, bed, bad, bug).

Objective

Recognize and produce the /b/ sound in a series of words that all begin with the /b/ sound.

Materials

  • Blue construction paper
  • Picture cards
  • Objects that begin with the /b/ sound (optional)

Activity: Big Blue Banner

  • Help your child identify and attach the /b/ sound picture cards (see below) and objects to the blue construction paper to make a big blue banner.
  • As you work and talk together, try to use words beginning with the /b/ sound (e.g., You put lots of big bows on the big blue banner. Do you want to put a blue ball or a black ball on our big blue banner? Our big blue banner is brilliant!).
  • When the big blue banner is finished, say the name of each object together, emphasizing the /b/ sound at the beginning of each word (e.g. /b/ /b/ ball).
  • If possible, put the big blue banner up on a wall in a bedroom for more fun practicing the /b/ sound throughout the week.
