State the Objective

Literacy Activities
Create a beautiful big banner

  • Help the children attach objects or pictures of things that begin with the /b/ sound (see below) to the big blue banner.
  • As the children place items on the banner, encourage them to say the name of the item, emphasizing the /b/ sound (e.g., "/b/ /b/ button").
  • Tell the children “___ (e.g., button) starts with B!”
  • Use words that start with the /b/ sound as the children attach the objects or pictures to the banner:
    • "The big blue banner needs bows."
    • "Buttons and balloons belong on the big blue banner."
  • Review the /b/ items that were put on the banner, emphasizing the /b/ sound.
  • Have the children repeat the words back to you; remark that all the words begin with B.

Copy the target letter

  • Write a large, capital B on the banner.
  • Let the children use black, blue, and brown markers to trace the B as they say, "/b/ /b/ /b/ brown" (or whatever color marker they are using).

March and say the sounds in words

  • Have the children march in place as they say each sound of the word bag:
    • Segment sounds: /b/ (march right), /a/ (march left), /g/ (march right)
    • Blend sounds: jump with both feet and blend the sounds into the whole word: bag.
  • Repeat with the words big, bus, bed, bad, and bug.
