Lesson Plan

Target Words:

  • dive
  • dance
  • dip
  • drum

Materials:

  • Do As I’m Doing music
  • Do As I'm Doing alternative lyrics

State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will dance, dig, and dive as they listen for words with the /d/ sound, such as do, drive, dash, and draw

Literacy Activities
Do as I am doing with the /d/ sound

  • Teach the alternative lyrics to the tune of Do As I’m Doing
  • Give a child the opportunity to choose an action that starts with the /d/ sound (e.g., “Do you want to drop or drink?”)
  • Choose a child to be the leader and lead everyone in doing the action while singing the song.
  • Repeat and call on different children to be the leader and choose the next /d/ sound action word.

More Practice
Repeat words with the target sound

  • Ask several children to help you think of things from the activity that begin with /d/ that a man named Dan could do (e.g., Dan can dance, and drink, and draw.)
  • As each child suggests an action, add it to the sentence and have the children act the sentence out as you repeat it, emphasizing the /d/ sound at the beginning of the words (invite the children to join in saying the sentence if desired).
