Literacy Activities
Fit the Fin on the Fish game (similar to Pin the Tail on the Donkey)
- Display the fish picture (see below).
- Explain that the children will need to fit a fin (see below) on the fish.
- Point out that fit, fin, fat, and fish all start with the /f/ sound.
- Let each child take a turn blindfolded trying to tape a fin on the fish.
- Have the other children chant, “Fit the fin on the fish! Fit the fin on the fish!” louder or softer, depending how close the child is to the correct spot.
- Once the child places the fin on the fish, have everyone cheer, "Fantastic! You fit the fin on the fish!"
- Review words that start with the /f/ sound, emphasizing the /f/.
- Let other children fit fins on the fish.
Identify the /f/ sound in words
- Say some words that begin with /f/ and one word that does not (e.g., fish, fin, fun, fit, dog).
- Emphasize the words that have the /f/ sound at the beginning.
- Have the children flap their arms like the fins of a fish when they hear a word that begins with the /f/ sound.
- Have the children hold still if a word they hear does not have the /f/ sound.
