Literacy Activities
Fashion a flag
- Show the children a flag and emphasize the /f/ sound as you say that “it is fun to fly, flap, flip, and flutter a flag.”
- Help the children attach their flag to a straw or stick so they can flap it around.
- Invite the children to listen for the /f/ sound as they have fun flying, flapping, flipping, and fluttering flags.
Fly a flag
- Display and read the Fun Flying a Flag chant (see below) to the children, emphasizing the /f/ sound in the words that start with /f/.
- Teach the children the chant as you do the actions.
- Help the children recall how they could flick their flags, fly flags, and make flags flutter, flap fast, and flip.
More Practice
Recognize words with the /f/ sound
- Have the children stand with their flags, then flip and flap the flag around to make the flag flutter.
- Ask the children to listen for the /f/ sound as they flap, flip, flutter, and fly their flag.
- Ask the children if they hear the /f/ sound in the words flap, flip, flutter, and flag while emphasizing the /f/ sound.
Blend sounds into words
- Have children blend word parts by clapping as they produce the /f/ sound, the word ending, and the whole word.
- For example: f (clap) + at (clap) = fat (clap).
- f + ast = fast
- f + all = fall
- f + un = fun
