Literacy Activities
Fashion a flag

  • Show the children a flag and emphasize the /f/ sound as you say that “it is fun to fly, flap, flip, and flutter a flag.”
  • Help the children attach their flag to a straw or stick so they can flap it around.
  • Invite the children to listen for the /f/ sound as they have fun flying, flapping, flipping, and fluttering flags.

Fly a flag

  • Display and read the Fun Flying a Flag chant (see below) to the children, emphasizing the /f/ sound in the words that start with /f/.
  • Teach the children the chant as you do the actions.
  • Help the children recall how they could flick their flags, fly flags, and make flags flutter, flap fast, and flip.

More Practice
Recognize words with the /f/ sound

  • Have the children stand with their flags, then flip and flap the flag around to make the flag flutter.
  • Ask the children to listen for the /f/ sound as they flap, flip, flutter, and fly their flag.
  • Ask the children if they hear the /f/ sound in the words flap, flip, flutter, and flag while emphasizing the /f/ sound.

Blend sounds into words

  • Have children blend word parts by clapping as they produce the /f/ sound, the word ending, and the whole word.
  • For example: f (clap) + at (clap) = fat (clap).
    • f + ast = fast
    • f + all = fall
    • f + un = fun
