Target Words:

  • gorgeous
  • green
  • gown
  • goat
  • gloves

Materials:

  • Green, round plastic tablecloth for the gown
  • Picture cards (see below)
  • Glue sticks or glue

Overview
The children will make a gorgeous green gown while listening for words that begin with the hard g sound (/g/), such as green, gown, goat, and gloves.

Practice the skill within an activity
Glue things that start with the hard g sound on a green gown

  • Before you begin, cut a hole in the top of the tablecloth so it will fit over your head and under your armpits, then cut two strips off the bottom to make shoulder straps for the gown and attach them to the gown.
  • Spin around in your green gown and ask the children if they would like to help you make your green gown look gorgeous (beautiful).
  • Show the children each of the picture cards, pointing out that each picture starts with the hard g sound (/g/) as in green, gown, and gorgeous.
  • Have the children take turns choosing and identifying a picture card (see below) and ask each child, “Will a ___ (e.g., ghost) make my green gown gorgeous?”
  • After they answer the question, let the children glue their picture cards to the gown and invite all the children to say, “Glue a ___ (e.g., ghost) on the gorgeous green gown.”
  • Continue until all of the children have had a turn putting a picture card on the gown.

Apply the skill
Repeat phrases with the target letter

  • With the children, review the hard g picture cards they put on the green gown by saying together, " We got a ___ (e.g., goat) for the gorgeous, green gown," emphasizing the hard g sound.
