State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will shop at the Pretend Pennies Store and listen for words that begin with the /p/ sound, such as pig, pen, penny, purse, and pail.

Literacy Activities 
Put pennies in a pail 

• Pass out pennies to the children and let them shop in the Pretend Pennies Store you have set up. 
• Allow them to pick an object that starts with /p/ or a picture card (see below) to purchase. 
• When the children make a purchase, have them put their penny in the pail and say, “I put my penny in the pail for a ____ (e.g., pig)!” 
• If desired, give the children more pennies and allow them to make multiple purchases.

More Practice 
Clap out sounds in words 

• Have the children take apart the word pig and clap once for each sound in the word (/p/ /i/ /g/). 
• Ask the children how many times they clapped for the word pig (3). 
• Clap for each sound in the word pig again to reinforce the model. 
• Repeat with other words that start with /p/ (e.g., pet, pad, pot, pin). 
• Point out that all of the words start with the /p/ sound.
