  • sun
  • super

Materials:

  • Large sun (large sheet of yellow butcher paper cut out in the shape of the sun)
  • Crayons or markers

State the skill within and activity
Tell the children they will decorate a sun while listening for things that begin with the letter S.

Practice the skill within an activity
Spin around the super sun

  • Hand out crayons or markers, and have the children draw stars all over the yellow sun. Together, chant, “Stars, stars, stars on the sun, sun, sun!”
  • Write the letter S on the sun for the children to see, and encourage them to copy the letter all over the yellow sun. Together, chant, “S is on the sun!”
  • Have the children stand in a circle around the sun and spin in place as everyone says, “Spin around the sun!”

Apply the skill
March and say the sounds in words

  • Have the children march and say each sound of the word sun:
    • segment sounds: say /s/ (march right), say /u/ (march left), say /n/ (march right)
    • blend sounds: jump with both feet and say sun to blend the sounds into the whole word
  • Repeat with other words that start with /s/ (e.g., sat, sick, soup, sock, seat).
