  • spider
  • spot
  • search

Materials:

  • Silly, Sneaky Spider
  • “Silly, Sneaky Spider” song
  • Spider coloring page

Overview
The children will look for a sneaky spider as they listen for words that start with the /s/ sound, such as spout, soda, and spot

Literacy Activities
Search for the Silly, Sneaky Spider

  • Before you begin, make the Silly, Sneaky Spider as follows:
    • Cut black paper into a circle, draw a straight line from the outside to the center of the circle, then cut a slit along the line.
    • Overlap and tape the circle to form a shallow cone-shaped body then fasten a string to the center of the slit.
    • Tape eight small strips of black paper around the cone to form legs.
  • Show the children the Silly, Sneaky Spider you made as you teach them the “Silly, Sneaky Spider” song, pointing out that silly, sneaky, and spider both start with the /s/ sound.
  • Choose a child to turn around and close his or her eyes while you hide the spider somewhere in the room.
  • Have the child search for the Silly, Sneaky Spider while everyone else sings the “Silly, Sneaky Spider” song.
  • Repeat several times so other children can have a turn.

More Practice
Decorate a spider web with /s/ words

  • Give each child a spider coloring graphic and crayons.
  • Help the children think of things that start with the /s/ sound that could get stuck in the spider’s web (e.g., sandwich, squirrel, skeleton).
  • Invite the children to draw several things that start with /s/ on the spider web, then have them tell you what they drew as you label it, emphasizing the /s/

The silly, sneaky spider went up the soda spout.
Down came the soda and splashed the spider out.
Out came the sun and soaked up all the soda.
Then the silly, sneaky spider went up the spout again!
