Shells on the Shore

Objective

  • Recognize and/or produce the /sh/ sound in a series of words that all begin with /sh/.
  • Point to words in a text to demonstrate print awareness.

Materials:

  • Real seashells
  • Paper seashells (see below)
  • A sheet to use as a shore

State and model the objective
Tell the children they are going to learn about Sally, who sells seashells on the seashore.

Practice the skill within and activity

Gather shells on the shore

  • Before you begin the activity, lay a sheet on the floor and put seashells on the sheet like they are on the seashore or in a sandbox.
  • Have the children practice the “Sally Sells Seashells” tongue twister (see below).
  • Say it together very slowly, and then a little faster.
  • Clap on every word to make it easier.
  • Tell the children that they can collect their own shells on the seashore.

Apply the skill

Repeat words with the target letter

  • Write each of the words from the “Sally Sells Seashells” tongue twister on a shell. Have the children repeat after you as you write them.
  • Point to each of the shells as you repeat the tongue twister together.
