State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will help Shelly the Sheepdog learn not to shred things that begin with /sh/, such as shoes, shampoo, shower, and ship

Literacy Activity
Shelly the shaggy sheepdog

  • Before you begin, cut the /sh/ objects or graphics to look partially shredded, but still identifiable.
  • Show the children the picture of Shelly the Sheepdog and the bag of things Shelly shredded, pointing out the words that start with /sh/
  • Have the children take turns pulling an item out of the bag as you ask, “What is this? It’s a sh___! What did Shelly do?”
  • Have the children respond by saying, “Shelly shredded the sh___.”
  • Say together, while shaking your head, “Shame on you, Shelly! You shouldn’t shred sh___!”
  • Review the things Shelly the Sheepdog shredded again, letting the children shout out the words that start with /sh/.

More Practice
March and say the sounds in words

  • Have the children march and say each sound of the word sheep:
    • segment sounds: say /sh/ (march right), say /ee/ (march left), say /p/ (march right).
    • blend sounds: jump with both feet and say sheep to blend the sounds into the whole word.
  • Repeat with other words that start with /sh/ (e.g., shut, shop, shell, ship, shed).
