Objective
Recognize and/or produce the /sh/ sound in a series of words that all begin with /sh/.

- Dog stuffed animal or picture of a sheepdog*

State the Objective
Tell the children that they will teach Shelly the Sheepdog not to shred things that begin with /sh/, such as shoes, shampoo, shower, and ship.
Literacy Activity
Learn about the /sh/ sound
- Write the letters sh and tell the children that they make the /sh/ sound.
- Have the children write the letters /sh/ while repeating the /sh/ sound.
Shelly the shaggy sheepdog
- Before you begin, cut the /sh/ objects (see below) to look partially shredded, but still recognizable.
- Show the children the stuffed dog or the picture of a sheepdog (see below) and say that she is named Shelly the Sheepdog
- Show the children the bag of things Shelly shredded, pointing out the words that start with /sh/.
- Have the children take turns pulling an item out of the bag as you ask, “What is this? It’s a sh___! What did Shelly do?”
- Have the children respond by saying, “Shelly shredded the sh___.”
- Say together, while shaking your head, “Shelly! You shouldn’t shred sh___!”

Review the things Shelly the Sheepdog shredded again, letting the children shout out the words that start with /sh/.
March and say the sounds in words
- Have the children march and say each sound of the word sheep:
- segment sounds: say /sh/ (march right), say /ee/ (march left), say /p/ (march right).
- blend sounds: jump with both feet and say sheep to blend the sounds into the whole word.
- Repeat with other words that start with /sh/ (e.g., shut, shop, shell, ship, shed).
