Shop for Shorts
Objective
Recognize and produce the /sh/ sound in a series of words that all begin with /sh/.

- Sheet or shelf
- Pretend money*
- Pictures of things that start with /sh/*
- Objects that start with /sh/: shoe, shirt, sugar, shovel, shampoo, nut shells, sea shells, or shoelace (optional)

State the Objective
Tell the children that they will shop for items that start with the /sh/ sound, such as shoe, sheet, shorts, and shirt.
Literacy Activities
Learn about the /sh/ sound
- Write the letters sh, and tell the children that they make the /sh/ sound together.
Have the children write the letters sh while repeating the /sh/ sound.
Shop at the /sh/ shop
- Set up a shop on a shelf or sheet with /sh/ pictures (see below) or objects.
- Let the children pretend to be shoppers who are looking for items that start with /sh/.
- Have the children shop for /sh/ items using pretend money (see below).
- Comment on what the children are shopping for (e.g., “This shopper shopped for shoes, shells, and shapes”).
- Comment on what the shopkeeper has in the shop (e.g., “Our shop has shirts, shells, sugar, ships, shovels, and shampoo”).
- Ask the children to repeat the phrase, “I shopped at the shop to for (a) sh___, sh ___ and sh___.”
Reflect on the activity
- Write a list of the /sh/ objects the children shopped for (e.g., shoe, shoelace, shorts, shirt, shell, sugar, shark, ship, sheep, shovel, shapes, shampoo).
- Read the list with the children, emphasizing the /sh/ sound and having them repeat the words after you.
- Have the children circle the letters sh in the words while they repeat the /sh/ sound.
