Shop for Shorts

Objective
Recognize and produce the /sh/ sound in a series of words that all begin with /sh/.
Lesson Plan
Target Words:
- shop
- shirt
- shorts
- shoes
- ship
Materials:
- Pretend money
- Picture cards or objects that start with /sh/
State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will shop for objects that start with the /sh/ sound as they listen for words that start with /sh/, such as shoe, sheet, shorts, and shirt.
Literacy Activities
Shop at the /sh/ shop
- Set up a shop with the /sh/ picture cards or objects and give each child some pretend money for the activity
- Help the children identify each of the items in the /sh/ shop, pointing out that they all begin with /sh/.
- Go through the items in the shop again and have the children hold up a pretend dollar every time they hear a word that begins with the /sh/ sound.
- Let each child shop for different /sh/ picture cards or objects using his or her money.
- Help each child repeat the phrase, “I am shopping for (a) sh___,” as he or she pays for an item.

Activity: Shop for Shorts
- Help your child look around the house for objects that begin with the /sh/ sound (e.g., shorts, shirt, shoe, shoelace).
- Set up all of the /sh/ objects like a store then take turns with your child being the cashier and the shopper and saying things like, "I am shopping for (a) sh___," or "Thank you! You should come and shop again!"
- Repeat until all the /sh/ items have been chosen.
- Variation: When shopping at a grocery or department store, look for things that start with the /sh/ sound and pretend to shop for them as described above.
